Playboy

Well, it's the end of an era with Playboy. They've decided to go a little more mainstream and not show nudity in their magazine anymore. While it was a surprise to me at first, the more I thought about it, the more I guess it made sense to do something like this. Playboy, since the start of the internet really, has been slowly going down hill as far as subscribers goes. They're down to 800,000 from a high of over 7 million in 1972. It's the same with a lot of print media. Maxim has been going down as of late. FHM isn't even sold in the States anymore, you have to order it from the UK. Men's magazines are on a slow decline to death, and Playboy is just trying everything they can to stop that from happening. I don't want to blame everything on the internet, but I think you can blame most things on it. Especially Facebook. Man, fuck Facebook.

But, as with alcohol causing and solving problems in the same stroke, the internet is where Playboy went to find their solution. If you followed Playboy, you would have noticed that the website itself has stopped showing nudity since August of last year.

As a result, Playboy executives said, the average age of its reader dropped from 47 to just over 30, and its web traffic jumped to about 16 million from about four million unique users per month. - New York Times

If you're wondering, all of the nudity went over to their sister site, Playboy Plus.

And this is where they found their solution. If it worked for the website, can it work for the magazine too? I'm a little iffy on that one. Not wanting Playboy in your browser history because of the nudity, and not wanting to spend money on a magazine subscription is two different things, I think.

The main reason that I think Playboy has stopped selling as much as it has, is that it was trying to sell ice to an Eskimo. Who is going to buy a magazine that has three, maybe four girls a month when you can log onto the internet and get ten girls with a click of a button. Even as a supplement, it wasn't holding up very well. Can taking out those three girls really help you? Can turning your magazine into something like Maxim help, when Maxim isn't doing very well on it's own?

Also, there was a stigma of having a Playboy magazine laying out on your coffee table. With the current attitude towards men actually having a sex drive, I would be surprised if Playboy was found in anyone's house. Masculinity today is almost a dirty word, and should be frowned upon. 'Did you like staring at those tits in that movie?' 'Umm.. yes?'

Will grocery stores that have long since carried Playboy start to carry it again? Will any store that carries magazines risk offending their female clientele? I don't know. Will the bachelor risk it being found by his girlfriend? Will the explanation of, 'It's OK, they don't show nudity anymore really pass muster? I don't know if it's going to help at all.

When Playboy started, it was the most risky version of something that you could find. For porn, it was the peak of the mountain. There was no substitute. Now though, it's a watered down version of something else. A relic of the past. Porn in it's most Disney of forms.

If you're last in the race, does turning around and heading the other way mean you're in first?
